Science Fact

Tropical cyclones (often referred to as hurricanes or typhoons) feature strong winds, driving rain, rough seas and areas of low atmospheric pressure. They frequently form in tropical areas of the globe and can do considerable damage to populated areas. Examples of this include the 1970 Bhola cyclone, Typhoon Nina which hit China in 1975 and more recently in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina which caused great devastation and loss of life when it hit southern parts of the USA.

Weird Science

There has been only one case in the world involving a person with 'immortal cells'. Immortal cells are cells that can divided indefinitely outside of the human body - normally there is a limit called the Hayflick limit. In 1951, Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with cancer and she died within a year. Unknown to her and her family, a doctor took samples of her cancer cells for his own personal study. They were then passed on to other doctors for study. The doctors were astounded when they discovered that the cells from her tumor had an active version of the telomerase enzyme (the mechanism by which cells age) which also caused them to proliferate abnormally fast. The cells were then propagated and passed on to other scientists. Today the cell line is known as the HeLa cells and there are so many around today, that they weigh many times more than Henrietta weighed when alive. The cells have been used in research for polio, cancer, AIDS, for mapping genes, and many other things. Today they are so common that they often contaminate other cell cultures and have rendered some biological studies invalid because of their presence.

JugglingScientific exploration and experimentation is hard work and can get pretty tiring after a while. Reeko knows what's it's like to work, day after day, night after night, toiling away at a complex experiment, repeating it over and over until you get it right, sweeping up broken glass after a failed experiment blows up in your face (happened just last week), explaining to the Justice Department that the experiment truly is for peaceful purposes (also happened just last week), sweating away trying to find that ellusive ingrediant that will perfect that cure for jock itch without the nasty side effect of festering boils (err... yeah, come to think of it, last week was a pretty bad week for Reeko). Ego the Lab Robot

Reeko’s latest experiment produced a result none of use expected. In an effort to create lab assistants, Reeko developed a robotic humanoid named R332. After the language function was installed, Reeko began to converse with R332 and quickly discovered that this new robot has quite an attitude! He was renamed Ego as a result. When not helping Reeko with an experiment, Ego likes to pull up a chair and chat with the lab visitors. Be forewarned – he’s can be quite a handful sometimes!
