Boston Dynamics continues to blow us away with its amazingly lifelike robots and such is the case with the newest version of the Atlas robot. Atlas is a humanoid robot made by Boston Dynamics (the makers of the ever-popular BigDog military robot). Atlas can walk on two legs and use its “arms” to lift, carry, and climb (and maybe one day, fight back against robot bullies).  Atlas is even sophisticated enough to adjust and navigate through tight, cluttered places.

Atlas features 28 hydraulically actuated degrees of freedom and a sensor head with cameras and a laser range finder (LIDAR). It stands 5 feet 9 inches and weighs 180 pounds (compared to its 330-pound predecessor, that’s lightweight).

There are several Atlas robots being manufactured. Check out the video below which shows how well Atlas recovers from falls and adjusts to obstacles – even human ones.  And on the day that robots take over the world, remember this video…

More about Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot

Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot is designed for a variety of tasks. The Atlas robot is capable of performing a wide range of complex movements, including walking, running, jumping, and even backflips. It can also navigate uneven terrain and climb stairs with ease.

The robot is primarily designed for use in industrial and military applications. It can be used for tasks such as search and rescue, disaster response, and handling of hazardous material. It can operate in a variety of environments, including urban and natural settings and is equipped with a range of sensors that enable it to detect and avoid obstacles, as well as to navigate through complex environments.

One of the most impressive features of the Atlas robot is its ability to perform highly complex movements with great precision. This level of dexterity is made possible by a combination of advanced software and hardware technologies, including powerful processors, high-speed actuators, and sophisticated algorithms.

Despite its many advanced features, the Atlas robot is still a work in progress. Researchers and engineers at Boston Dynamics are constantly working to improve the robot’s performance and capabilities, with the goal of making it more versatile, reliable, and adaptable to a wider range of applications.
